Ken Levine – Ghost Story Games at MAC 2026

Story, Systems and Surprise

What does it really take to build games where story, character, performance and player freedom don’t cancel each other out - but sharpen each other?

Ken Levine

Ken Levine is a video game designer and creative director, best known for leading the creation of BioShock and BioShock Infinite. Previously, he was a designer at Looking Glass Studios, where he worked on Thief, and a co-founder of Irrational Games, where he worked on SWAT 4, Freedom Force and System Shock 2, among others. He is currently President and Creative Director of Ghost Story Games, where he is working on the upcoming launch of Judas.

In his MAC session, Ken will explore the creative decisions behind building narrative games that feel both authored and alive. The conversation will range from his process for inception and writing, to the influences that shape his work, to the small details that can alter the direction of a project in ways players may never fully see. We’ll also dig into the storytelling techniques and performances that excite him, the dramatic devices games can borrow from other artforms, and the ongoing balancing act between linear narrative and systems thinking. The session will also touch on games as art, and what players might expect from Judas.
