Thomas Keane – Meaning Machine at MAC 2026
Human Meaning in the Machine
Why is the age of AI actually the "Era of the Writer" - and how can you use "intelligent dice rolls" to build characters that finally have subtext?
Thomas Keane is a game designer focused on turning speech and language into a core gameplay mechanic. In this session, he challenges the idea that AI is the "death of the author," arguing instead that the human hand is now more important than ever before .
Tom will reveal the inner workings of Meaning Machine’s debut, Dead Meat, where players can ask suspects anything and - crucially - see the subtext of their internal thoughts . He explains why the standard "prompt and pray" workflow is fundamentally broken and introduces a new paradigm: the "bully pipeline". From the influence of Dungeons & Dragons to the "drum machine" principle of breaking technology to find its soul, this talk is a blueprint for creators who want to use AI to tell better, more human stories.
